SAIL UP: Navigating the Digital World

"The rapid emergence of generative artificial intelligence has catalyzed a massive cultural shift in how we interact with technology and perceive reality. From the debut of early models like ChatGPT and Bing Chat to the current landscape of Google Gemini and Microsoft Copilot, society has found diverse ways to utilize these tools. Furthermore, the rise of image and video generation services, such as DALL-E and Nano Banana, has significantly expanded the horizons of machine learning. However, as these technologies grow in scope and scale, so does their potential for misuse. Across various sectors, AI is being used to replace human labor without regard for accuracy or reliability. In academia, its use often bypasses critical learning processes, while in the social sphere, bad actors exploit generative tools to compromise the dignity and privacy of others. Moreover, corporations have increasingly leveraged AI for mass surveillance and habit tracking. Because these models train on vast amounts of human data without "thinking" in a traditional sense—and often operate with insufficient safety guardrails—they risk "hallucinating" facts, potentially distorting our collective perception of reality. In line with our advocacy to push the sciences forward, the Bicol University Movement for the Advancement of Youth-Led Advocacy (BU MADYA), in collaboration with the Academic Consortium of Computer Science Students (BUCS ACCESS), will spearhead a webinar entitled SAIL-UP: Navigating a Digitized World. Scheduled for May 16, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM, SAIL-UP (Sustainable AI, Level Up!) centers on the impact of generative AI and our responsibilities as both users and technological innovators. This webinar aims to educate the public on the ethical implications and potential harms of current AI trends. By fostering a deeper understanding of these challenges, we seek to ensure that we can continue to innovate and move forward with AI while actively addressing its dangers in this critical era."
